Contemplation in Exile
I am interested in traditions that see wilderness as a place for solace, testing, or
transformation. For this body of work, I’ve taken cues from paintings and drawings
of the past—especially seeking out pieces in which the land seems to function as a
psychologically charged stage. These ancient works act as a series of lenses through
which I am able to view other approaches to the land as a site for contemplation.
The smaller, iconic pieces in the exhibition are based on Chinese scholar’s rocks,
which have been used for centuries as objects that encourage reflection. Some of the
drawings reference particular rocks directly, while others are my own version of the
practice.
